SYNOPSIS
For years Konrad Lang has been living off the Senn family; at first a childhood playmate of Thomas, later the house keeper of their summer residence. The family used him as a handyman and Konrad seemed satisfied with it. As his health slowly deteriorates, Konrad starts telling Simone, the young wife of the family heir, memories from his early childhood which do not seem to stick quite exactly to the official family version. Konrad’s stories seem to seriously trouble Elvira, the family’s matriarch, as if this harmless old fool somehow had the means to destroy her. A special friendship grows between Konrad and Simone which finally leads the the young woman to unveil the family secret. Elvira, who can be far more dangerous than she appears, tries to prevent that…

PRESS
“Seductively good!” Der Spiegel
“Elegant like a Chabrol” Vogue
“European cinema in the best sense.“ Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
“Brilliant” Berliner Kurier
“Under Bruno Chiche’s direction, a sensitive portrait of an outsider takes shape, but also a mordant family drama about the decadence and haughtiness of the super rich—as if it were a piece by the late master Claude Chabrol… A mordant parable about the decadence of the bourgeoisie!” TV Spielfilm/Cinema
“To hide the key to an old crime in forgetting, of all things, was quite a coup by Swiss author Martin Suter.” Süddeutsche Zeitung
“A star-studded and moving adaptation! … The serious topic of dementia never slips into depressive territory, mainly thanks to a forcefully rousing Depardieu, between childish naiveté and battered by life… You just want to keep watching this gentle hulk. … Sometimes the underlying tension and bourgeois mishpocha with its scheming is reminiscent of the infamous protagonists of the unforgettable Claude Chabrol, except that Suter’s heroes aren’t quite as vicious, but rather driven, divided souls.” Blickpunkt Film
“Chiche has made an astoundingly elegant adaptation of Martin Suter’s SMALL WORLD, full of curve balls and a magnificent Depardieu. Especially when he sings his quavering rendition of “Lilac Wine”! (Source missing)
“I was very moved by SMALL WORLD—more than by the novel, obviously also since I wrote the novel. I thought the film was very elegant—real cinema!” Martin Suter
